1949 Vegas Show Trip

About the last of March, Buck got a call from Jim Moss, Scout Executive, Las Vegas, Nevada, asking if the Koshares would dance for them June 3rd. Buck told them that we couldn't make such a long trip because of final exams at school. They told him they had already thought of that - that they were going to send an airplane to fly us down there and back!

Well, this left most of us speechless. To get ready for this trip was quite a job. All the boys who went had to get medical exams and parental releases. We all

packed our costumes and clothing as light as possible. We were scheduled to leave June 3rd, dance the night of the 3rd, and come home June 4th.

Then it hapened! Because of read tape, the airplanes didn't show up. Everybody was downhearted until Buck said that the airplanes would come the 7th of June.

This time they came. Two big Army C-47s - the type of twin engine plane which was called the "workhorse" of the Pacific during the war.

The Sioux went in one plane, the Kiowas in the other and the Navajos divided. On the way to Vegas, almost everyone in the Kiowa plane got air sick. the pilots said it was one of the roughest trips they had ever taken. Only four got sick in the Sioux plane. One person just couldn't make it to the bucket so he used the nice clean hat of one of the leaders.

While in Vegas, we went swimming at the new Municipal pool, visited Boulder Dam, walked around looking at the gambling casinos, and the fancy hotels. We ate at the fancy hotel "The Last Frontier." the Las Vegas Scouts and leaders were really swell to us.
