Koshares End Season
A Year to Remember
Come celebrate the 75th Anniversary for the Koshare Indian Dancers all year long in 2008. The main celebration will begin on Friday, July 25, 2008. Small events will be held throughout the year and will be announced later this year and early next year.
Countdown to the
75th Anniversary Celebration
The summer has ended and the Koshares are returning to school. What a summer it was to see though. This year was more about dancing and entertaining. It was about dedication, spirit and pride. By now everyone has heard about the three weeks the Koshares spent in Japan. However, we cannot say enough about those who stayed home to keep the doors open and the scouts entertained while the older kids were in Japan. A group of younger kids lead by former Head Chief

Elections for Brave and Chiefs

Daniel Cranson and current Brave Dion Armenderiz put on some of the finest shows while the older kids were away.

Although they were missing many of the dancers that do dances usually reserved for Chiefs and Braves, the group was able to put together several full hour-long performances.

With a group of younger kids like those this summer, everyone can't wait to see what they will accomplish in the future. It just goes to show how strong the Koshare program is. But, more importantly,
importantly, how much stronger it will be once these younger kids take on leadership positions.
Can Japan Compete with New Mexico?
At the end of the summer a trip was planned for those who did not get the opportunity to go to Japan. At first it may not have seemed this trip could compare to that of going to the Far East. Still the trip would be interesting as it would include Santa Clara Feast Days, time in Taos, camping at Bandelier and sightseeing in Santa Fe.

A week before the trip an unexpected call came from Koshare friend and artist Ernesto Zepeda. Ernesto called to tell us he wanted to give some paintings. To see Ernesto now became the focal point of the trip. Mostly it would be a good chance for the Koshares to meet with one of the Santa Fe Artists. Before heading back to La Junta from their New Mexico trip it was planned that the meeting with Ernesto would take place.

We came to find that Ernesto was very busy making his final arrangements to move back to Honduras. In his apartment he had his artwork waiting by the door for the Koshares to pick-up. When we last spoke to Ernesto he had talked about a few pieces that he wanted to give to the Koshares, but he had enough to fill the hands of every person on the trip. By the time we had everyone loaded with a stack of paintings it began to rain. What a sight to see all the Koshares running through downtown Santa Fe with a stack of artwork in the middle of the rain storm. With their jaws to the ground several gallery employees stood by their windows watching these kids make off with this artwork. It looked like a great art heist was under way by a bunch of kids, but it was just the Koshares with the gifts of a generous friend. I would have to say not many Koshares have ever got a chance to run with over $250,000 in art through Santa Fe in the middle of a rain storm.
Jeremy Manyik received a call from Ernesto Zepeda who announced that he was leaving the country permanently and needed to dispose of some charcoal drawings. He felt the Koshare Indian Museum would be a good place for these drawings. Unfortunately, he was in a rush and would not be able to travel to Colorado to deliver the items. As fortune or fate would have it, the Koshare Indian Dancers were traveling to New...
